In Mihajlo
Pupin Institute the research
in the area of traffic control and management has been carried
out for more than 30 years. The conducted research can be
divided into two main streams:
• Urban traffic control and
management, and
• Motorway and highway traffic
control and paytoll systems
The research concerned with urban traffic
control deals with isolated intersection control, arterial
control and area traffic control. Various methods of system
analysis and optimization algorithms have been applied, resulting
in original traffic control methods and computer programs.
Mihajlo Pupin Institute, for example, was one of the first
world companies having computerized traffic contol system
applications.
In the area of motorway and highway control
systems the research has been directed toward application
of changeable traffic signs and paytoll systems. As for paytoll
systems, IMP was one of the first companies in the world that
designed, developed and implemented a paytoll system based
on PC technology. From this system, the system for fare collection
in garages and parking lots emerged. Since the first paytoll
system, three generations of paytoll systems have been developed,
so that nowadays IMP presents a distinguishable and competitive
producer in this area in the world.
The latest research activities include the
application of GPS technology for vehicle location services.
Various systems have been designed, developed and implemented,
for different investors, including open pit mines, public
transport, communal organizations, military applications,
etc.
